Our Hot Springs
The hot springs have been a place of gathering, rejuvenation, healing and relaxation for centuries. There are many options for enjoying the hot, soothing mineral waters. A spirit of respect and sanctuary pervades the clothing-optional pools.
Breitenbush is the largest thermal spring area in the Oregon Cascades. Every condition known to promote the emergence of hot springs exists here: subduction zone, volcano, glaciers, permeable rock, deeply incised intersection between volcanic ranges, watershed apex, floodplain and adjacent quaternary formation converge in this idyllic land nestled in a curve of the Breitenbush River.
Meadow Pools
There are three natural pools lined with smooth river rocks. One of these is designated as a “silent” pool for quiet, contemplative soaking. It overlooks the river below. The other two allow for conversation. All overlook a meadow and have views of the surrounding mountains.
Spiral Tubs
Aligned in the four cardinal directions, the four Spiral Tubs vary in temperature. Ranging from 100 to 110 degrees and ending with a cold water dip, this is sure to awaken the internal senses creating the perfect wheel of sacred water medicine.
Sauna
The Steam Sauna is a cedar cabin perched above a capped geyser with steam rising through slots in the floor. The artesian water geyser would rise 30 feet in the air every few minutes, just like Old Faithful, had we not capped it off.
Meals
Vegetarian buffet-style meals are included with every overnight reservation. Enjoy three meals a day, starting with dinner the day of arrival, and ending with lunch on your departure day. Made from nearly 100% organic ingredients, and produce from local farmers. We can only accommodate low gluten, no eggs, or no dairy.
Meals are not included with Day Use or Early Arrival, but you can add lunch to either, through our booking portal or by emailing office@breitenbush.com.
Labyrinth
A meditative walk to the center of the labyrinth is a journey to one’s own center, enhanced by the song of the nearby river. The Breitenbush labyrinth, outlined in river rocks, is modeled after the nave at the famous Chartres Cathedral in France.
Lodge
Built in the 1920’s, the historic Lodge is the center of activity at Breitenbush. The large decks are favorite places for summer dining. Inside the Lodge you’ll find our gift shop, guest services, massage and our lodge rooms.
Gift Shop
The gift shop offers a selection of necessities that you may have forgotten. In addition you could find a new book to read, local artisan gifts, and Breitenbush merchandise.
Coffee, tea, cool drinks and snacks are also available for purchase at the gift shop. Your purchases help support our rebuild process, thank you!
Off-the-Grid
The utilization of our own hydroelectric power from the Breitenbush River and heat from natural springs means your Breitenbush experience is off the grid. There is no cell service, TV or guest Internet – this provides you with an unusual opportunity for digital detox.
Concerts
In addition to the occasional sounds of a guitar, drums or the Lodge piano, concerts are offered occasionally when musicians on tour come to the springs. These are open to all guests and are free of charge. Generally they are offered by acoustic singer-songwriters but have also included Kirtan and even Tuvan throat singers.
River
The main stem of the Breitenbush River is formed by the confluence of three stems that come together at the eastern boundary of the Breitenbush property, the North Fork Breitenbush, South Fork Breitenbush and Devils Creek. Then the main stem of the Breitenbush flows through our property. Enjoy a day sunbathing on the river rock, and for those brave enough, a plunge into the crisp cool waters.
Substance-free Environment
We offer a space free from alcohol and drugs. This creates a serene atmosphere to connect with yourself, the land, and those around you.
Historically, substance free has included coffee. We have evolved to now offer coffee and teas for purchase.
Daily Well-Being Classes
Breitenbush has offered Daily Well Being Classes for over 30 years. Yoga, meditation, EDGU, breath work, history of Breitenbush and tours of Breitenbush’s off-grid utilities provide a glimpse into our offerings. Enjoy a favorite practice or learn something new. These classes vary in frequency and availability. Here is our calendar of classes, subject to changes.
Forest
Originating in Japan, shinrin-yoku, translated as forest bathing, is simply the practice of spending time outdoors under the canopy of trees. While the National Forest is currently closed and so are all our hiking trails, there are sections of our property where trees survived the fire and where you can rekindle your connection with nature. We look forward to watching the rebirth of our own land and the National Forest around us.
Fire Circle
When the season permits, we offer a fire circle. Fire is an elemental force that offers warmth, ceremony and a place to commune.
